Beckett says that the only thing they can do is go to Vos and make amends. Han agrees to come along in order to make things right and exacts a promise from Beckett to pay him and Chewbacca for their services.
Chewie agrees to come along. After surrendering their weapons to Captain Aemon Gremm , they enter the public gallery Beckett's team enters the yacht's hallway.
Beckett speaks to Vos' concierge Margo , seeking an audience with Dryden Vos. Captain Gremm informs Vos of Beckett's presence. Beckett advises Han and Chewbacca to keep their eyes down because the people here are not their friends, gesturing to the wealthy people around them, eating and drinking the most expensive, tasty and quality food available. Han has an unexpected reunion with Qi'ra, who now works for Vos. The two drink together while reminiscing about their past and ambitions.
Beckett soon arrives with Vos and introduces Han and Chewie to him. Vos reveals that Qi'ra is his top lieutenant. After exchanging pleasantries, Vos chastises Beckett for underestimating Enfys Nest and tells Beckett to give him a reason not to kill them.
Since the few available stocks of coaxium are in Imperial hands, Han and proposes stealing unrefined coaxium from Kessel , where the Pyke Syndicate runs a mining operation. While Vos is unwilling to jeopardize his syndicate's business relations with the Pykes, Han and Beckett inform him that they have no alliance with the Pykes and taking on the operation themselves would not implicate Crimson Dawn.
Qi'ra is supportive of Han's idea but warns that the unstable coaxium must be brought to a processing facility quickly before it deteriorates. Beckett suggests Savareen since it is not under Imperial control.
Vos approves of the plan but sends Qi'ra to keep an eye on Han and Beckett. In the turbolift , Beckett says that he can provide the gear while Qi'ra offers to provide the ship. There, she introduces the team to Lando Calrissian , an accomplished smuggler and pilot who reportedly won his ship in a game of sabacc.
Walking past two dueling droids, they find Lando playing sabacc with several alien patrons. Against Qi'ra and Chewbacca's advice, Han challenges Lando to a game of sabacc, seeking to win his ship.
Han wins the first round and collects several credits. Han agrees to a second round and places a wager on Lando's ship, reputed to be the fastest in the galaxy. However, Lando uses a sleight of hand to win. Following the game, Lando speaks with Qi'ra, who tells him that they need a ship capable of doing the Kessel Run. Beckett manages to convince Calrissian to join the mission in exchange for 25 percent of the profits.
While chatting with Calrissian, Beckett recalls killing the bounty hunter Aurra Sing during a skirmish. Han and his companions also encounter Lando's droid co-pilot L , who has a female programming and is an avowed droid rights advocate. L objects to the droid fighting pits at the Lodge and picks a fight with the owner Ralakili , who objects to her trying to stop his droids from fighting. L almost chokes Ralakili but Lando convinces her to let him go.
Despite L's misgivings about the newcomer, Lando and the others set out for Lando's ship, which has been impounded. After L cuts a hole through the impound lot, Lando shows Han and his companions his ship, the Millennium Falcon. Lando has refurbished the ship including installing an escape pod and wet bar.
Beckett agrees to remove the gravity lock in return for taking five percent off Lando's cut, reducing it to 20 percent. Lando reluctantly agrees to Beckett's deal. As the Falcon disembarks, Weazel informs Enfys Nest that they have planted a homing beacon on the ship. Enfys gambles that if they survive, they will bring the price to them. While traveling aboard the Falcon , Han tells Lando that he recognizes the ship as a YT light freighter because his father worked at a CEC plant before he got laid off.
Solo's dad built this and wanted to be a pilot. Lando remarks that his mother was the "most amazing woman" he had ever known. L arrives and ushers Solo out of the co-pilot seat. She sets a hyperspace course for Kessel and they jump into lightspeed. Lando explains that they have to travel through the Akkadese Maelstrom to reach Kessel. Meanwhile, Beckett plays dejarik with Chewbacca. Beckett uses one of his pieces to take out one of Chewbacca's pieces, angering the Wookiee who slams his fists on the hologram set.
Beckett schools Chewbacca that he has to think a few steps ahead. Han asks if they have seen Qi'ra but Beckett replies that people are predictable. Han walks to Qi'ra's quarters where she is trying on a blue cape. Qi'ra asks Han about his plan for Kessel.
He wants to ask her about her experiences following their separation on Corellia but Qi'ra is not interested. Han gives Qi'ra a passionate kiss and the two embrace. Beckett walks in on them and reminds them that they have got a lot of work to do. In private, Beckett tells Han that he is making a big mistake by trusting Qi'ra. He tells Han that him and Chewbacca would make a good crew but doesn't trust Qi'ra. Beckett advises Han to trust nobody and to assume that everyone will betray him.
Han thinks this is a lonely way to leave but Beckett says this is the only way. Lando and L take the Falcon out of hyperspace and arrive outside the Akkadese Maelstrom. Lando goes to check on the "damps" and asks if L needs anything. She sarcastically replies "equal rights" as the ship travels through the stormy cluster.
When Qi'ra arrives in the cockpit, L explains that the sound is caused by carbonbergs , planet—sized objects crashing into each other. She warns that it is dangerous for ships to travel through the Maelstrom. L asks Qi'ra about her plan and notices the brand on her hand. When L points out that Han is in love with Qi'ra, she denies it but L confides that Lando is infatuated with her but that she doesn't share the same feelings for her master. As they approach Kessel, Beckett briefs the team about their plan to reach the thermal vault where the coaxium is stored.
He warns everyone to stick to the plan. The Falcon lands in a clearing at the base of the mine where they are greeted by several Pykes including Capo Quay Tolsite.
Han and Chewbacca pose as slaves while Beckett poses as a helmeted "security attache. One of the Pyke sentinels forces Chewbacca and Han Solo to their knees with a pike and inspects them. Tolsite sends Han and Chewbacca to be clipped. Before leaving, Qi'ra punches Han in the gut but discreetly passes him his lucky charm.
Qi'ra, L, and Beckett accompany the Pykes into Tolsite's control room while Han and Chewie are led into the mines. L translates for Tolsite, who cannot speak Galactic Basic. Qi'ra watches with concern on the surveillance cameras as Han and Chewie are beaten by their Pyke captors. Tolsite insists that "Floren's" "security attache" wait outside his office. While Tolsite is not looking, Han and Chewie turn the tables on their guards as the camera feed fades.
Han knocks out his guard but Chewie ends up pulling the arms off his captors. Back in the control room, Beckett tricks two guards into holding his pike and then shoots them. L is impressed with Qi'ra's combat skills. In the mines, a disguised Han and Chewbacca mingle among the slaves and guards.
She convinces him to free his droid brethren while she directs Han and Chewbacca to the thermal vault. The liberated droids free the slaves of their remotely controlled restraints and chains, sparking a droid and slave uprising in the mines.
As they approach the vaults, Chewbacca breaks off to free a Wookiee slave named Sagwa. Han passes Chewie a pike, which he uses to attack the Pyke guards beating Sagwa.
Following Beckett's directions, Han reaches the vault and incapacitates the guard. After L unlocks the vault, Han steals 12 unrefined coaxium canisters. Meanwhile, Lando reminisces on the fifth chapter of the Calrissian Chronicles , which deals with his encounter with the Sharu. Lando is distracted by the noise resulting from the uprising and L tells him that she found her true purpose.
Han struggles to push a sled carrying the canisters but is noticed by the Pyke guards. Chewbacca comes to the rescue and takes out the guards with his pike. Sagwa and Chewie help Han to push out the canisters.
Lando exits the Millennium Falcon to join the battle as Han and the rest of the team fight their way out with the liberated slaves and droids. Han and Lando shoot several Pyke sentries. Beckett and Qi'ra exit the mines. L cheers. While Chewbacca and Sagwa load the coaxium canisters aboard the Falcon , Han and the others exchange fire with Pyke sentries, who have brought a sonic cannon. Before they can leave, L3 is fatally damaged by gunfire. A grieving Lando comes to the aid of the dying L, who succumbs to systems failure.
Lando is hit and Han comes to his aid, driving the sentries away. A slave named Tak leads the slaves to safety. Chewbacca embraces Sagwa before leaving with Han and Lando. Chewbacca carries a wounded Lando aboard the Falcon while Qi'ra takes out the Pyks' sonic cannon with a grenade , which causes an inferno. Han flies the Falcon out of the mine into the skies of Kessel. While Lando mourns the loss of L, Qi'ra volunteers as Han's co-pilot.
They are joined by Chewbacca while Beckett seals the hidden storage compartment containing the coaxium. As they approach the Akkadese Maelstrom, Lando warn them that they have to hurry due to the volatile nature of the unrefined coaxium. The Falcon soon encounters an Imperial Star Destroyer , which has exited hyperspace in response to the rebellion on Kessel.
Lando wants to drop the shipment but Qi'ra warns that that Dryden will kill them if they fail. Seeking to recover the Falcon ' s stolen coaxium cargo, the Star Destroyer dispatched several TIE fighters and heavy fighters in pursuit of the freighter. Due to the highly volatile nature of the unrefined coaxium, Lando estimates that completion of the Kessel run is impossible before the fuel detonates - the conventional route having never been done in less than twenty parsecs.
Han proposes taking a short cut through the maelstrom, which Lando regards as suicidal. Han convinces Lando to download L3's neural cords, which contains her navigational data, into the Falcon ' s systems.
However, a third fighter manages to evade Beckett's laser cannon and inflicts damage on the top of the Falcon ' s hull, causing Lando to fall. Han rolls the Falcon , striking the TIE fighter with its side and sending it into an asteroid. More TIE fighters continues the pursuit, prompting Han to state they needed to divert power to the rear shield generator.
Chewbacca does so, causing Han to ask when he learned to fly. Chewbacca responds that he is years old. Qi'ra checks on Lando in the passenger area and uses one of his red capes to douse a fire despite his protests. ATIE fighter manages to shoot the Falcon ' s rear ventral cannon, causing it to break off.
Mimicking a move copied from a Corellian street racer, Han gets Chewbacca to deploy the landing gear as the Falcon scrapes against the surface of an asteroid. This damages the landing gear but uproots rocks and debris, one of which breaches TIE fighter's cockpit.
Han then takes the Falcon deeper into the Maelstrom. Meanwhile, Lando and Qi'ra manage to retrieve L3's internal processor. Beckett observes the coaxium vials becoming more unstable and alerts the others. Lando and Qi'ra manage to install L3's processor into the Falcon ' s systems.
As they reach the Maw Cluster , L3 constructs a model of the Akkadese Maelstrom and warns them that they are approaching a massive summa-verminoth. The Falcon soon find themselves face to face with the monster. The crew tries to escape the monster, but end up arriving at a large gravity well , which Lando identifies as the Maw. Thinking fast, Han ejects the Falcon ' s escape pod into the well for the summa-verminoth to follow, which takes the bait.
Guiding the ship's systems, L3 finds a way out 90 degrees to the left. However, the Falcon is trapped in the gravity well.
As the Millennium Falcon travels through hyperspace, Rey tells Chewbacca to get to safety as soon as he gets her signal to rendezvous. Rey climbs into her escape pod which is jettisoned out the Falcon after exiting hyperspace.
Rey flies the pod into the hangar where she is greeted by Kylo Ren and a pair of stormtroopers , who place her in binder cuffs. As Kylo Ren takes Rey up the turbolift to Supreme Leader Snoke's throne room, she tells him that she feels the good in him and that she saw his future. She promises to help him. Kylo Ren responds that he foresaw that she will turn to him and claims to know who her parents are.
Snoke is pleased with his apprentice for delivering Rey, telling him that his faith is restored. Snoke bids Rey to come closer, admiring Rey's strength and remarking that lightness has emerged to meet the rising darkness. Snoke says that he warned Kylo Ren that as his powers grew stronger, so would his equal in the light. He then snatches Skywalker's lightsaber from Ren's hand with the Force. Snoke uses the Force to bring Rey closer to him. Rey warns him that he underestimates Skywalker, Ben Solo, and her; and that it would be downfall.
Snoke claims that he was responsible for the mental connection between her and Ren as part of a plan to find and destroy Luke; exploiting their emotions and desires. Snoke demands that Rey reveal Skywalker's location but she remains defiant. Snoke uses the Force to levitate Rey and probes her mind for Skywalker's location. Having probed Rey's mind and learned Skywalker's location, Snoke releases his Force grip on Rey and mocks Skywalker for his "wisdom.
Rey tries to seize Skywalker's lightsaber with the Force but Snoke uses the Force to hurl it at her. He then uses the Force to levitate her and force her to watch the destruction of the Resistance fleet through a viewport.
Rey charges at Snoke but he uses the Force to throw her to the ground. Kylo retrieves his lightsaber. Finn and Rose faced a public execution in the presence of First Order officers, soldiers, and pilots.
Meanwhile, in the Supremacy ' s hangar bay, Finn and Rose are brought out for a public execution in the presence of General Hux, Captain Phasma, and many First Order officers, soldiers, and pilots.
Hux slaps Finn and thanks Phasma for her services. Finn and Rose learn that DJ has sold them out for his own freedom and financial gain. Rose calls DJ a "lying snake" and struggles against her captors. DJ replies that they got caught and that the First Order was offering a better deal.
DJ also reveals the Resistance's evacuation plan to the First Order, which is confirmed by the departure of 30 transports from the Raddus. General Hux orders the Supremacy to open fire on the Resistance transports, destroying several ships and inflicting heavy losses on the Resistance. Vice-Admiral Holdo orders the transports to continue their journey to Crait. Finn denounces DJ for his treachery but the criminal is indifferent to their struggle, remarking that "they blow you up today and you blow them up tomorrow.
Snoke orders Kylo Ren to kill Rey with his lightsaber. Believing he can read Ren's mind, Snoke is jubilant and mocks Rey. Ren uses the Force to pass Skywalker's lightsaber to Rey and the two join forces as the Praetorian guards converge upon them to avenge their fallen master.
Kylo kills one with his lightsaber. Rey manages to kill a Praetorian with her lightsaber but a second Praetorian wraps his Bilari electro-chain whip around her blade. Rey manages to break free by impaling the guard with her blade. A third guard divides his Vibro-arbir blade in half and charges at Rey. Ren is cornered by three guards but he breaks free and impales one, before throwing his body into a generator where he is disintegrated.
As the three other guards converge on him, Kylo kills two but is grabbed by one who traps him in a headlock. Rey is trapped by the other guard but manages to break free by dropping her blade and then slashing him. Rey helps Kylo to kill the last guard by handing him Skywalker's lightsaber, which he uses to impale the guard through the head, killing him.
He invites her to rule the galaxy by his side. When Rey refuses, Kylo compels Rey to admit what she thinks she knew all along: that her parents were insignificant junkers who sold her for drinking money, and that they are dead and buried in the wastes of Jakku. He tells her that she comes from nothing and is nothing but not to him. Ren pleads with Rey to join him by his side. Seeing the Resistance fleet in peril, Holdo climbs into the helm of the Raddus. Not realizing Holdo's plans, Hux orders the Supremacy to continue firing.
Using the Force, Rey and Kylo struggle for possession of Skywalker's lightsaber until it breaks into two, causing a large explosion. Watching the Raddus powering away, Connix thinks she is running away but Poe disagrees. Holdo sacrifices herself to ram the Raddus into the Supremacy at lightspeed , cleaving it in two and destroying much of its escort fleet instantly.
The resulting explosion sets the Supremacy ' s cargo hold aflame and interrupts Finn and Rose's execution. Amidst the inferno, Rose helps Finn up and the two search for a shuttle. However, Finn and Rose are cornered by Phasma and several stormtroopers. Finn and Phasma duel amidst the chaos. Phasma manages to knock Finn to the ground with her staff.
Rose and Phasma exchange fire. With Phasma distracted, Finn knocks her to the ground with his Z6 riot control baton. With her helmet shattered, Phasma denounces him as "scum" but Finn retorts that he is "rebel scum. In Snoke's chamber, Hux surveys the corpses of Snoke and his guards in disbelief.
He sees the unconscious Ren and prepares to shoot him, but is forced to relent when Ren awakes. Learning that Rey has escaped on Snoke's escape shuttle , Ren frames her for Snoke's death and orders Hux to prepare for a ground assault on Crait. This causes Hux to explode in fury at his rival's presumptuousness, but Ren angrily Force chokes him into submission, declaring himself the new Supreme Leader.
On Crait, the surviving Resistance fighters regroup at the abandoned rebel base , which was once a mine. General Organa orders her forces to shut the shield door. Following a brief shootout, a brief reunion ensues with Poe hugging BB Rose leads the search for weapons and finds rusted ammunition and several old ski speeders. Poe and Leia also send a distress signal to their allies in the Outer Rim Territories , seeking help.
Shortly later, they sense the earth shaking while the vulptices scurry away. C-3PO informs the others that BB-8 has done a schematics of the cave and found that there is only one entrance. Finn encourages the Resistance by reassuring them that allies will come and proposes that they take out the siege cannon.
While Resistance soldiers under General Caluan Ematt man the trenches and laser batteries, Poe, Finn, and Rose lead a charge with 13 old ski speeders to destroy the First Order assault force's massive siege cannon. The speeders try to break off but several are destroyed by TIE fighters, which also strafe the trenches, killing many Resistance soldiers. The Falcon also draws the TIE fighters away, shooting down several. Kylo Ren orders his forces to take that "piece of junk out of the skies.
The ship's rear cannon is crushed against the rocks, but several TIE fighters also collide with the rocks. Chewbacca, with a porg watching, fly the Falcon into a canyon that leads to the surface.
Finn and Rose approach the superlaser siege cannon, which begins powering up. Supreme Leader Ren and General Hux order their walkers to concentrate fire on the speeders, destroying several. Poe thinks it is a suicide mission and orders Finn to retreat but Finn is determined to take out the cannon.
He accelerates his speeder, ignoring Rose's pleas. Before Finn can complete his suicide mission, Rose prevents Finn from sacrificing himself to destroy the battering ram cannon, which then blasts a hole in the fortress. Poe and the surviving Abednedo pilot retreat into the trenches with the surviving soldiers. Finn climbs out of his wrecked speeder and rescues an injured Rose. When he asks why she stopped his mission, Rose replies that they survive by "saving what we love.
As the superlaser burns through the gate of the Crait base, Kylo Ren orders his forces to storm the base and show no quarter to the Resistance. Connix informs D'Acy that the Resistance broadcast has reached multiple points but that they have received no response. Leia laments that the galaxy has lost hope. However, Luke suddenly arrives to comfort Leia. After exchanging pleasantries, Luke apologizes and tells Leia that he has come to confront Ren.
Leia thinks her son is gone but Luke reassure her that nobody is gone. Outside, Luke confronts Ren alone outside the breached door, giving the surviving Resistance fighters time to escape. Ren orders the First Order walkers to unleash a massive volley of turbolaser fire on Luke's position. Hux questions the amount of firepower but Luke emerges from the blast crater completely unscathed and mocks the First Order's firepower with a brush of his shoulder.
Ren resolves to confront Skywalker despite Hux's objections, whom he shoves against the hull of the Upsilon -class command shuttle 's cockpit. Finn drags a wounded Rose on a makeshift stretcher into the Crait base while Ren lands his shuttle. Watching the battle, Finn wants to help but Poe realizes that Skywalker is buying them time to escape. After seeking C-3PO's advice, Poe decides to follow the vulptices, hoping they would lead them to a hole.
Meanwhile, Rey uses the beacon to track down her Resistance comrades' movements. She manages to track them down by following a group of vulptices. Finn and the Resistance encounter a pile of rocks which the vulptices are able to slip through but is too small for them.
Outside, Rey discovers the pile of rocks and uses the Force to lift them. As the Resistance fighters stream out, Rey hugs Finn. Outside, Kylo Ren confronts his uncle personally in a lightsaber duel on the salt plain outside the base, and asks Luke if he has come to forgive him or to save his soul. Luke replies no as the two draw their blades. Kylo charges at Luke but his uncle repeatedly evades Ren's attacks.
Luke apologizes to Ren for failing him, but Ren angrily rejects his apology, declaring the Resistance is dead and the war over, and that with Luke's death shall come the ultimate death of the Jedi.
Luke counters by saying that both the Jedi and the Rebellion are born anew in Rey and the Resistance, and invites Ren to strike him down but tells he will always be with him just like Han.
Ren tries, but is surprised to see Luke is still standing. He pokes his blade through Luke's torso, and to his horror it passes through him as if he were a ghost, revealing that Luke is physically still on Ahch-To and has been stalling for time via a non-corporeal Force projection of himself.
Luke says goodbye to his fallen nephew before his projection fades away, leaving Ren furious. The effort to create the projection was too much for Luke, and he collapses from exhaustion. With the last of his strength, he climbs up to the cliff where he trained Rey and stares out towards Ahch-To's binary sunset, similar to the one he saw on Tatooine thirty-four years earlier , before he became a Jedi.
Luke then dies, and his body vanishes as he becomes one with the Force. On Crait, Leia and Rey sense Luke's death. The First Order storms the base, but are too late to prevent the remaining Resistance fighters from escaping aboard the Falcon , albeit not before Ren shares another force bond moment with Rey, who eventually shuts him out, much to his dismay. After leaving Crait, Chewbacca hugs Leia.
Finn opens a drawer on the Falcon to get a blanket for the gravely injured Rose, revealing briefly to the audience that Rey stole all of the books from the original Jedi library and Yoda did not destroy them after all. After being formally introduced to Poe, Rey laments Luke's death as she looks hopelessly at his broken lightsaber and the group's small numbers. Leia, however, notes that Luke is now at peace and that the Rebellion has all it needs to rise again. Later, on Canto Bight, the stable children regale themselves with a story about Luke's adventures.
They are interrupted by Bargwill Tomder who angrily orders the children to get back to work. Outside, Temiri Blagg, still wearing the Resistance Ring that Rose gave him, summons his broom with the Force and hopefully gazes up to the stars.
Ram Bergman , Johnson's frequent collaborator, was also brought on to the project as a producer, working alongside Kathleen Kennedy. Johnson partially derived his story from one of George Lucas 's ideas for Episode VII, in which Luke lives in seclusion in a Jedi temple and reluctantly trains a young girl named Kira.
I plan it all out first. So while I was doing that, I was going in twice a week and sitting down and just vomiting these ideas out and talking them through with Kiri Hart and her whole group.
